Integrating Young Adults for Positive Change
2 Timothy 2:22-26 (ESV) "22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 23 Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will."
This verse really sticks out to me as to how God is maturing the young adults, including me, at First Pres. I have changed a lot in the past two years, praise God. Not being quarrelsome and correcting with gentleness can be hard for those filled with passion and little temperance. My conversation with Jane Dearth was very encouraging last night at coordinating council, as my eyes were opened to how young adults really need to be integrated into the committee life of the church.
The main avenue in most church-goers’ minds for change in the congregation is Sunday preaching from the pastor. Presbyterians use committees and other groups a lot, and without much direct confrontation on Sunday mornings, it can give the impression that we don’t care enough about sin. The truth is that without a concentrated effort to include new members, they will never experience how effective committees and groups are in affecting positive spiritual change. I am expectant in the continued integration and unity of our entire congregation.
